Beckwith's Patents.

W.G.Beckwith's 1871 design had simplicity and low cost as criteria priorities. The ring-pull drive, however, proved a step too far.

A coming-of-age of the design was realised in the 1874 patent. The machine remained a table clamp model, but now incorporated a sophisticated needle alignment facility, which allowed a more reliable stitch length adjustment.
